2022 International Forum on Polyurethane Frontier

Technology – Day 1: Highlights Review

On November 17, International Forum on Polyurethane Frontier Technology and Polyurethane Entrepreneur Summit 2022, co-organized by Shanghai Polyurethane Industry Association and Shanghai University of Science and Technology, supported by Chem366 was officially held in Shanghai.

The morning session started with “PU Sustainable Development Inspires Innovation – Covestro Pave the Way for Circular Economy” shared by Dr. Siyan Qing, innovation manager at Covestro. Covestro aims to become climate neutral by 2035. The company believes that achieving a circular economy and carbon neutrality in the chemical industry relies on technological innovation. For polyurethane materials, both the innovation of material products and technological applications in polyurethane downstream sectors are important. Covestro has established a green and low-carbon circular industrial system. Its circular economy solutions involve renewable energy, alternative raw materials, innovative recycling and others. These initiatives included AdiP (adiabatic isothermal phosgenation) technology-based MDI production, pioneering gas phase technology application into TDI production, and producing biobased aniline. In terms of circular applications in polyurethane downstream sectors, Covestro strives to build a closed-loop recycling solution via cross-industry collaboration. For PU waste disposal, Covestro has partnered with European enterprises to promote mattresses recycling on a large scale.

Mr. Yinghao Liu, senior manager of polyurethane product R&D at BASF in Asia Pacific, gave his presentation “Low-Carbon Polyurethane Solutions” at the forum. The report showcased the specific measures taken by BASF to reduce carbon footprint and promote circular economy. In terms of promoting circular economy, the measures included providing renewable raw materials, conserving fossil resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, etc.; introduction of mechanical and chemical recycling, lightweight solutions for improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions, etc.

In the salon session, Dr. Nanqing Jiang, secretary-general at China Environmental Protection Federation’s Green Recycling Inclusive Committee, Dr. Siyan Qing at Covestro, President Zhou at Suzhou Xiangyuan New Materials, and President Li at Shandong INOV New Materials, jointly discussed on “Sustainable and Circular Economy”, and shared their opinions, as well as each company’s practical actions and future development directions.

The reports shared on the first day of this event also included “Carbon Neutrality and Circular Economy Analysis” given by China Environmental Protection Federation’s Green Recycling Inclusive Committee, “Southeast Asia Polyurethane Market Analysis” by Pudaily, “Application and Development Direction of Polyurethane Chain Extender in Emerging Fields” by Xiangyuan New Materials and “Formaldehyde-free Empowered, A Win-Win Future” by Wanhua Chemical.
